oa Civil Engineering = Siviele Ingenieurswese - Composite macadam pavements: Low cost, high empowerment

Abstract

In this project, which began initially with a contract to rehabilitate some old bitumen penetration macadam service roads at the Baragwanath Hospital complex, innovative empowerment-friendly technologies were developed for application in urban community participative road construction. Macadam-type pavements, which have a history of durability and quality, were analysed, re-engineered and modernised. Composite macadam-type pavements evolved that are cost-effective, utilise small plant and are suitable for SMME contractors. In addition to the technological development, this technique also facilitates social and economic change and can act as a development and community empowerment mechanism.
