This article discusses a newly developed method for determining the rideability of different types of urban roads The Durban Corporation is now able to formulate a realistic, user-oriented specification for the evenness of wearing course hot-mix asphalt. So says Peter Wallis, materials testing manager with the Corporation, who, with Eric Lathleiff, has more than a year's experience with the California-type profilograph. This is, indeed, a progressive step, as straight edge tests hardly discriminate between poor and acceptable quality of ride. 'From our work we have been able to draw up acceptable limits for rideability for different types of urban roads and also establish at what limit the ride becomes so objectionable that drivers complain: said Wallis. All this work has been carried out on asphalt surfaced roads.
