Umgeni Water appointed consultants in October 1995 to undertake environmental and technical feasibility studies for the upgrading of the bulk water supply system for the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal The continual expansion of the north coast sub-region from Durban to Stanger has resulted in increased demands being placed on the existing bulk water supply to the growth points of Verulam, Umdloti, Tongaat and Ballito. In addition to this development, consumers who have, until recently, relied on local sources of water are now using the existing pipeline during peak periods. In April 1995 Umgeni Water's corporate planning department completed a planning overview of the north coast bulk water supply system. This study identified the most attractive means of supplying the long-term water demands of the consumers in the sub-region.
