One of the basic needs identified as having a high priority in the RDP is the supply of potable water. The North-Western Witzands Wellfield and Recharge Basin project at Atlantis is an example of a water supply project that displays ingenuity, technical excellence and environmentally appropriate solutions. Atlantis is totally dependent on groundwater resources for its water supply. Groundwater was initially regarded as an interim supply source, allowing for the postponement of construction of the costly Berg River Scheme, which was to supply surface water to Atlantis. The successful implementation of the Atlantis Water Resource Management Scheme (AWRMS) means, however, that groundwater now serves as a permanent town water supply.
