A new hospital in Welkom was constructed entirely on drilled pile foundations to overcome geotechnical problems The Goldfields Regional Hospital at Welkom was planned to alleviate the problems of health care and hospitalisation facilities for the burgeoning population of the Free State Goldfields. The existing hospital facilities in the surrounding towns of Virginia, Odendaalsrus and Welkom were overcrowded and could no longer cope with the ever increasing number of patients. In order to solve the problem the Provincial Administrator decided to construct a centrally situated regional hospital on the outskirts of Thabong Township at Welkom. The project received SAICE's 1995 Bloemfontein Branch Regional Award for Excellence in Civil Engineering.
