Work on the R120 million 42-month contract to construct a completely new dual carriageway for the SA Roads Board through the 13 km of Du Toitskloof is now well advanced with 32 months gone, R82 million spent and 13,1 km of new carriageway (49 per cent of the total) open to traffic. Only 1 km of the narrow road constructed in the late 1940s is now still in use. Situated in a very scenic and environmentally sensitive area, the contract has involved the contractor, Savage and Lovemore West Cape, in environmental constraints that are not usual in road construction. The more awkward ones concern controlling the quality of water discharging from site into the pristine Molenaars River, which runs the length of the contract.
