Abstract

Recent statistics published suggest that there has been no let-up in the number of civil engineers emigrating from South Africa since the democratic elections, and in fact recent developments may have led to an increase in emigration. These statistics are supported by trends being observed by the SAICE Membership Committee. The major reasons for the loss of civil engineers as a result of emigration are: The belief that their children will have a better chance for education and for jobs in a different country A concern about the unacceptable level of serious violence in this country Dissatisfaction with remuneration levels for civil engineers in South Africa, and opportunities for improved remuneration levels overseas
