A project to supply Greater Mmabatho with an adequate water supply involved the relocation of a number of people, as well as sophisticated hydrology and water quality modelling The Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) decided in 1990 to proceed with the provision of potable reticulated water supply to the Mmabatho peri-urban villages, which have a population of approximately 130 000, as the dolomitic compartments that then supplied Mmabatho were expected to be inadequate beyond 1996. This project is the winner of a Mmabatho Branch Award for Excellence in Civil Engineering and was a nominee for last year's SAICE National Award for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (Technical Excellence).
