oa Civil Engineering = Siviele Ingenieurswese - Viewpoint Road safety - The role of the transportation engineer

Abstract

The role of the transportation engineer in the promotion of road safety is often underestimated - even by engineers themselves. The reason for this misconception can be traced back to the perception that the road and its environment are responsible for only about ten per cent of all accidents. However, many examples can be given of ways in which the engineer can, through judicious planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of roads, cater for human error, which is named as the major contributing factor in road accidents. Roads should not only be designed to be forgiving, but can also be maintained and operated to assist in changing the attitude of road users.
