Abstract

With demand outstripping the supply of water from the Vaal River, the DWAF investigated various inter-basin transfer schemes The Vaal River System supplies water to the economic hub of South Africa, which produces more than 50 per cent of the country's wealth and supports a major portion of the population. It also provides water for the large thermal power stations that produce 85 per cent of South Africa's electricity. Users from the system are located over six provinces - Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Northern Province and North West - and include the industrial core of South Africa - goldfields, coal fields, power stations, petro-chemical industries, iron/manganese mines, and irrigators.
