In less than two decades, geosynthetics have gone from being regarded as highly suspect 'plastics' that no self-respecting civil engineer would allow near his or her structure to having become established as an integral (and often indispensable) component of many of today's designs. The term 'geosynthetics' has been coined to cover the many and varied products used in civil engineering applications that are made from polymeric material and Includes geotextiles, geomembranes and geogrids, to name but a few. This special feature serves to highlight only a few aspects of this ever-expanding field and will hopefully convince the few remaining sceptics that geosynthetics are here to stay.
