Abstract

The Molototsi Scheme has brought water to over 100 000 people who formerly struggled to provide for their basic daily needs The Molototsi River Water Scheme - winner of a Northern Province Branch Award for Civil Engineering Excellence and a nominee for the 1998 National Award - was devised to supply potable water to the villages in the Modjadji Valley in Lebowa, from the village of Mampakgathe in the west (at the T-junction with the Tzaneen-Ga Kgapane road) to Lekgwareng some 50 km to the east. A total of 105 000 people are served by the new dam, and provision for livestock was also made in the design . The project was initiated in late 1993 by the former Lebowa Government, during one of the most severe droughts in history in the area. It was taken over by Department Water Affairs and Forestry in September 1994 and completed in June 1997.
