The construction of a toxic waste disposal site for Chrome International, South Africa (CISA) has made extensive use of geosynthetics, which have assisted in ensuring a safe and cost-effective structure. CISA appointed SRK Consulting Engineers to design the H:h (low to moderate hazard rating) site, which will be used to store waste produced during the processing of chrome ore. The waste has a high chrome and salt content that, if allowed to penetrate into the ground below the impoundment, would result in significant contamination.
