Engineers often have the unenviable task of taking the responsibility for the protection of expensive steel structures. More often than not they inherit the corrosion problems resulting from indifferent planning, unimaginative designs and unsuitable materials.
Most people are fascinated by models - the little girl with her dolls and miniature tea-sets, the little boy with his model trains, tractors and farmyard animals. Engineers, too, in a more sophisticated way, play with models - the aeronautics engineer tests a new aircraft shape on model scale in a wind tunnel or the hydraulic engineer designs a river intake, a spillway or a turbine with the aid of a model.
