Although traffic counting on rural roads in South Africa started in 1938, such counts have tended to be haphazard. The adoption by the Natal Provincial Administration of methods which had been brought up-to-date after many years of experience in the United States, amended to suit Natal conditions, was an example which should be followed by all road authorities.
