Abstract

Restrictions in relation to time, space, weather conditions and working conditions were all overcome to provide a world-class tourist facility The Table Mountain cableway, opened originally on 4 October 1929, is one of South Africa's premier tourist attractions. Eleven million people visited Table Mountain between 1929 and 1996, experiencing the thrill of riding the cableway and enjoying the magnificent views from the summit. By 1992, the cableway could no longer meet peak passenger demand, resulting in waiting times of up to six hours and, on occasion, the closure of Tafelberg Road. The cableway was closed temporarily from January to September 1997 to allow major alterations and upgrading of the facilities.
