The paper deals with grain stores in general, giving a short descriptionption of the various types. Mechanical handling plant details are discussed and the layout arrangement, and construction of the more popular vertical silos descriptionbed. Formulae are developed, based on thin cylinder theory, in an attempt to ascertain the magnitude of the stresses due to secondary bending induced by internal pressures, temperature and shrinkage. These stresses for different diameter bins have been tabulated for purposes of comparison. The Author suggests that the bin walls of a silo should be designed on the same basis as water retaining structures, ensuring that the concrete is not stressed beyond its tensile limit after taking both primary and secondary stresses into account.
