The problem of corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete in marine environments can be considerably reduced by the realistic application of sound principles of concrete mix design, mixing and placing. Steel, which should be clean and free from rust or scale, should be given 2-3 inches of concrete cover. All faults in the concrete should be repaired as soon as possible, and the curing procedure should be as effective and as long as possible. Very careful supervision of labour should be exercised at all stages of construction. A suitable surface waterproofer over the finished concrete will materially assist in the preservation of the structure. Further research is in progress; this may lead to a modification or extension of these recommendations.
