The university training of civil engineers is discussed in this paper with particular emphasis on the viewpoints of the practising engineer and the employer of engineers. The primary objectives of a university course are formulated and deficiencies in present-day procedures examined. Specialization is not recommended; nevertheless, the course should equip the student with sufficient knowledge of the diverse fields of civil engineering to enable him to decide in which branch he will carve his future career.
