This paper critically reviews work that has been done in overseas countries on the natural purification of raw sewage and sewage effluents in stabilisation ponds. Results which have been published by many research workers in different parts of the world on this subject indicate that stabilisation ponds offer a simple, economical and successful method of adapting natural forces for the complete purification of sewage. Basic principles of microbiology. biochemistry and oxygen transfer are briefly explained and structural features and design criteria of existing pond installations are summarised.

A simple basis is developed for the analysis of seepage from clay-lined ponds. The analysis is used to investigate and assess the relative importance of the various factors affecting the seepage performance of ponds.
