This paper descriptionbes the civil engineering improvements undertaken by the South African Railways during the period 1963-1966, prior to the electrification of the Witbank-Komatipoort section of the Eastern Transvaal Main Line. The mineral and agricultural wealth of the area served by the Eastern Transvaal System of railways and the growth of rail traffic necessitating the improvements to the carrying capacity of the line are descriptionbed. Some reference to the Selati line is included as the phenomenal growth of the traffic emanating from this line is the prime reason for the electrification of the Eastern Main Line.
The problem of shoaling at St. Lucia was investigated by means of a movable bed hydraulic model. The project was to find the most effective and economical means of maintaining throughout the year a permanent connection between the sea and the lake, this being vital to the preservation of the St. Lucia Nature Reserve.
