oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Sishen-Saldanha railway line : first year of operation

Abstract

Bulk transportation schemes function with design principles differing from ordinary state railway systems. The Sishen-Saldanha Bay Project was constructed and operated by the SA Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation until it was handed over to the South African Railways as a functioning scheme in April 1977. The initial running-in period and operational phase of the railway line up to April 1977 are outlined in this paper.
