oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Design and construction of the permanent way for the Sishen-Saldanha rail link

Abstract

The design parameters for the rail track for the Sishen-Saldanha railway line were established following studies of rail systems throughout the Western world. Change from the 1 065 mm gauge used in South Africa could not be justified and basic design philosophies developed by the South African Railways over the years, modified to suit the particular requirements anticipated, were adopted - with cognizance being taken of certain expected future technological developments.

With available construction time being severely limited, highly mechanized methods of platelaying were essential to achieve approximately 3 km / d progress over sustained periods. Severe logistic and human problems had to be overcome during this high-rate platelaying operation through remote Western Cape areas, extending over 861 km and including the construction of eight passing loops, a halfway station and two major marshalling yards.
