oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Settlement of a compacted unsaturated earth embankment

Abstract

A settlement analysis of the Mita Hills dam, made during its design in 1956 / 57, has been reexamined in the light of current soil mechanics knowledge and computational procedures. The recent analysis proved to be superior to the design analysis even though based on the same soil data. The improvement has resulted more from improved computational power than from an improved understanding of soil behaviour.
