Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the practising engineer or engineering student with a simple, accurate and efficient algorithm for section analysis. The method may be applied to a variety of problems such as the determining of the area, moments of inertia, etc for structural sections or the calculation of the geometric properties of a stream channel cross-section for use in hydrological problems.


In the paper the theory of section analysis by line integration along the section boundary is presented. All the equations required for computing the common section properties are given in a form suitable for use on a desktop programmable calculator. A flow chart for a simple section analysis programme is provided.

Hierdie referaat poog om 'n akkurate en bruikbare algoritme aan te bied vir die analise van dwarssnitte. Praktiserende ingenieurs en studente in die ingenieurswese mag dit nuttig vind. Die metode kan toegepas word op 'n verskeidenheid van probleme soos die berekening van oppervlaktes en traagheidsmomente van strukturele profiele of die berekening van die geometriese eienskappe van rivierseksies wat van belang is in hidrologiese probleme.


Die teorie maak gebruik van lynintegrasie langs die grens van die snit. Al die vergelykings wat nodig is vir die berekening van die gewone eienskappe van dwarssnitte word aangetoon. Die vorm van die vergelykings is veral geskik vir gebruik met programmeerbare tafelrekenmasjiene. 'n Verloopkaart word verskaf wat 'n program aantoon waarmee 'n eenvoudige dwarssnitanalise gemaak kan word.
