oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - 'Forty years onward' the Po bridge and the Bulkpack Silo : Alfred Snape memorial lecture



I chose the title of my talk to you tonight, 'Forty years onward', from the opening line of the famous school song about 'when we look back and forgetfully wonder, what we were like in our work and our play', because it was just 40 years ago almost to the month when Prof Alfred Snape came to my wedding on 2 August 1941 and solemnly promised, with the oft-present twinkle in his eye, to give me my BSc degree as a wedding present. Those were his words, and I have been very pleased to have had his wedding present ever since.
