oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Calculation of effective length of columns in unbraced frames using the storey stiffness
The results are reported of different effective-length computations used for the design of column members in rectangular unbraced steel frames. A comparison is made between a storey stiffness approach and a study prepared by Kuhn & Lundgren who derived effective-length values for a number of columns using graphs and a rigorous computer solution respectively. The consequences of a variation in effective length have been demonstrated on a column example and a conclusion has been drawn regarding the suitability of the storey stiffness in determining the effective length of columns.
