oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Aspects of the machine foundation design at Drakensberg

 

Abstract

The paper describes aspects of the design and development of the foundations and surrounds of the pump-turbines, generator-motors and spherical valves located in the underground power station complex of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme. The configuration of these items of plant and the design and layout of their foundations differ greatly from those of the 180 MW Steenbras Pumped Storage Scheme in the Cape Province and are therefore unique in South Africa. For comparative purposes, brief references are made to alternative design approaches used overseas, although the relative merits of the various approaches are not discussed at length.


The fourth pump-turbine / generator-motor unit is presently undergoing commissioning trials. The foundations of this unit and the structure surrounding it were instrumented extensively in order to obtain feedback on the efficacy of the design, a comparison of projected and measured stresses and strains, and information upon which the possible improvement and optimization of future designs can be based. Observations and measurements which have been made to date are presented briefly and the more obvious conclusions that can be made are given. A more comprehensive analysis of the measurements already made and those that are still to be made will form the subject of a future paper.

Hierdie referaat behandel aspekte van die ontwerp en ontwikkeling van die fondamente van die pomp-turbines, ontwikkelaar-motore en sfeer-vormige noodkleppe van die ondergrondse kragstasie-kompleks van die Drakensberg Pompopgaarskema. Aangesien die masjienuitleg en funderingsmetodes grootliks verskil van die wat op die 180 MW Steenbras Pompwaterskema in die Kaapprovinsie gebruik is, kan hierdie ontwerp as uniek in Suid-Afrika beskou word. Daar word kortliks verwys na alternatiewe ontwerpbenaderings wat oorsee gebruik word, maar slegs vergelykings word getref. Die meriete van die verskillende benaderings word nie breedvoerig bespreek nie.


Die vierde pomp-turbine / ontwikkelaar-motor eenheid word tans aan 'n reeks indiensstellingstoetse onderwerp. In die fondamente van hierdie eenheid, asook die omhullende struktuur, is 'n groot aantal instrumente geïnstalleer om die doeltreffendheid van die ontwerp, die vergelyking tussen voorspelde en gemete druk / trekkragte en vervorming, en die basis van moontlike toekomstige verbetering op die ontwerp te bepaal. Waarnemings en opmetings wat reeds gemaak is word kortliks bespreek en sekere gevolgtrekkings wat op hierdie stadium gemaak kan word, word weergee. 'n Omvattende analise van die bestaande en toekomstige waarnemingsdata sal in 'n latere referaat bespreek word.
