oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Construction of the main civil works of the Drakensberg Pumped Storage Scheme

Abstract

Details dating to the construction methods used in the execution of the main civil contract are described, in particular the construction of large shafts and excavations in a rock formation requiring special treatment because of its special characteristics. Advance rates are quoted for certain items to indicate the extent to which operations were retarded because of the special precautions required by the specifications which were designed to cater for the specific characteristics of the rock formation. The application of the prestress grouting described is believed to be the first application of the method in the Republic.
