oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - The Drakensberg Project : water and power for South Africa

Abstract

The paper outlines the planning of the Tugela-Vaal Scheme and particularly the Drakensberg Project - a major undertaking combining an 11 m3 / s inter-basin water transfer with a 1 000 MW pumped storage hydro-electric installation. It describes how co-operation between the authorities responsible for water and electricity supply resulted in a cost saving to the country of R50 million (March 1979 values). It also sets out the basis of this joint participation in the financing and construction of the scheme. Finally, there is a glimpse of possible future extensions.
