Tailings impoundments are possibly the largest structures built by man. They permanently alter the topography of the area where they are constructed. Unlike a water dam, they cannot be breached at the end of their serviceable life: they will exist for many centuries and may impact the environment as they respond to the same natural forces which erode and level the surrounding landscape.
This paper describes a method for rapid estimation of flood peaks anywhere in South Africa, based on existing point rainfall information and regionalized direct runoff hydrographs. A typical diagram and formulae are presented. A worked example is provided in the Appendix.
