Many of the methods of measurement that twenty years ago were complex, unreliable laboratory research techniques have developed into simple, reliable, everyday tools that can be used equally well in the laboratory or the field. This paper gives examples of how valuable information on the in-service behaviour of structures and structural components can be obtained via field tests, even under adverse environmental conditions.
