Abstract

A heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) was used to evaluate a high-standard crushed-stone base pavement near Jan Smuts Airport on Road P15712. Short sections of the road were rebuilt with improved drainage where the previous pavement had failed due to drainage problems and the settlement of fills.The purpose of the test was to determine whether the rebuilt pavement could carry the expected traffic over the next 20 years and how it would react to the effects of poor drainage conditions The behaviour of the pavement was monitored and then analysed using mechanistic analysis techniques.


In comparison with lower standard crushed-stone base pavements, its permanent deformation behaviour is much better especially when subjected to water intrusion. It is concluded that the pavement will be able to carry the expected traffic and that it is not very sensitive to water. On the basis of these tests it is recommended that a high-standard crushed-stone base pavement with a thick stabilized subbase be regarded as a worthwhile alternative pavement structure for freeways carrying E4-traffic (12 to 50 million E80s).

'n Swaarvoertuignabootser (SVN) is gebruik om 'n hoëstandaardplaveisel met 'n gebreekteklipkroonlaag naby Jan Smuts-lughawe op Pad P157 / 2 te evalueer. Kort seksies van die pad waar die vorige plaveisel geswig het as gevolg van dreineringsprobleme en die vassakking van opvullings, is herbou en verbeterde dreineringstelsels is ook aangebring. Die doel van die toets was om te bepaal of die herboude plaveisel die verwagte verkeer gedurende die volgende 20 jaar sou kon dra en hoe dit sou reageer op bie invloed van swak dreinering. Die gedrag van die plaveisel is gemoniteer en daarna met behuip van meganistiese ontledingsmetodes ontleed.


Die gedrag van die plaveisel in terme van permanente vervorming is baie beter as die van ander gebreekteklipplaveisels van 'n laer standaard, veral wanneer die plaveisels blootgestel word aan waterindringing. Die gevolgtrekkings word gemaak dat die plaveisel in staat sal wees om die verwagte verkeer te kan dra en dat dit nie baie sensitief is vir water nie. Op grond van hierdie toetse word voorgestel dat so 'n hoëstandaardplaveisel met 'n gebreekteklipkroonlaag op 'n dik gesementeerde stutlaag oorweeg word as 'n verdienstelike alternatief vir deurpaaie wat E4-verkeer dra (12 tot 50 miljoen E80s).
