Various modern design specifications have introduced a sway limitation to satisfy the overall stability of low-rise steel frames. These sway limits are based on a relationship between sway and the elastic buckling load, ignoring the effects of axial beam forces. It is demonstrated in this study that this omission can lead to inconsistencies in the treatment of pitched-roof portal frames and that, as a result, an unintended reduction in safety can occur for practical structures. Revised procedures are therefore presented, incorporating the corrected elastic buckling load or a magnified first order sway.
