The response of prestressed concrete sleepers to torsional loading is investigated. A theoretical prediction of the ultimate torsional resistance moment of a type F4 prestressed concrete sleeper is given, using the space truss model for reinforced concrete beams under torsional loading. The results of an experimental investigation into the structural behaviour of prestressed concrete sleepers under torsional loading and a combination of torsional and flexural loading are reported. Even with the required design flexural moment an adequate resistance to combined moment and torsion was obtained.

Die gedrag van voorgespanne beton dwarslêers onder torsiebelasting is ondersoek. Die teoretiese weerstandsmoment teen torsie van 'n F4 tipe beton dwarslêer word gegee deur gebruik te maak van die ruimte vakwerk model vir gewapende betonbalke onder torsiebelasting. Die resultate van 'n eksperimentele ondersoek na die gedrag van beton dwarslêers onder torsie en onder die kombinasie van torsie en buigmomente word gegee. Daar is gevind dat die weerstand teen torsie van hierdie tipe dwarslêer onder normale omstandighede voldoende is. Selfs onder die ontwerp buigmoment is die dwarslêer in staat om 'n aansienlike torsiemoment te weerstaan.
