The permissible loads for bolted joints given in the Code of Practice for the Design of Timber Structures (SABS 0163)9 have recently been revised. The National Timber Research Institute of the CSlR would like to bring these new design values to the attention of all engineers involved with the design of timber structures in South African timbers and recommend that they be used. They have been derived from test results on bolted joints, and have been extrapolated by means of formulae given in the model timber code drafted by the International Council for Building Research Studies and Documentation (CIB)2, adjusted to incorporate a safety factor. The test method and derivation of results are described in reference 6.
