oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - The Phase Three expansion of the Richards Bay coal terminal railyard

 

Abstract

The Phase Three expansion increased the capacity of the Richards Bay coal terminal from 24 Mt/a to 44 Mt/a. The 70 km railyard layout to handle the 200 wagon unit trains was developed in co-operation with department of South African Transport Services (SATS).


A unconventional soak-away drainage system was designed to handle the stormwater,and its effectiveness was demonstrated during cyclone Demoina. Three track designs were developed in order to achieve a balanced track life under the different loading conditions.
The dunes loop was constructed within 12 months, and 25 km of track was remodelled without incurring demurrage charges or the cancellation of scheduled trains. The project was completed within budget. This was achieved through an unusually high percentage of engineering input at the development stage. Efficient railyard operation is maintained by a single Richards Bay Coal Terminal Company (RBCT) controller located in the control tower. This is achieved with centralized signalling supported by radio and telephone communications.

Die Fase Drie uitbreiding het die kapasiteit van die Richardsbaai steenkooleindpunt van 24 Mt/a tot 44 Mt/a verhoog. Die spoorwegwerf wat eenheidtreine van tot 200 waens kan hanteer, is 70 km lank en die uitleg is in samewerking met die SA Vervoerdienste ontwerp.


'n Onkonvensionele syferdreineringstelsel om stormwater te hanteer is ontwikkel en die doeltreffendheid hiervan is gedurende sikloon Demoina bewys. Drie spoorbaanontwerpe is ontwikkel om 'n gebalanseerde spoorbaanlewensduur onder verskillende belastingstoestande te verky.
Die duine uitwykspoorlyn is binne 12 maande gebou. Die 25 km spoorbaan is herbou sonder dat oorstaangeld gehef is of die kansellering van geskeduleerde treine genoodsaak is. Die projek is binne die begroting voltooi. Dit is te danke aan 'n buitengewone hoë ingenieursinset gedurende die ontwikkelingsfase van die projek.
Deur middel van gesentraliseerde sinjalering, wat ondersteun word deur radio- en telefoonverbindinge, word doeltreffende spoorwegwerfbeheer verkry deur 'n enkele RBCT-kontroleur in die beheertoring.
