oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - Geotextiles under South African railway track : technical paper

Abstract

Geotextiles can be used to prevent pumping distress on railway formations. Geotextile usage to date has however been limited by the unacceptable degree of holing which has occurred in service. Guidelines, based on field experience over the past 10 years, are given for the selection and installation of geotextiles. The application of these guidelines is expected to result in a significant reduction in the degree of holing. The role of geotextiles and the need for protective layers are discussed. It is concluded that geotextile separation layers have a great potential for use in remedial works on distressed railway formations.
