The use of wind tunnels in civil engineering applications is becoming increasingly important, both for development work for codes of practice and as part of the design process in structural applications. This paper examines the role of the wind tunnel in the design process. Wind tunnel modelling techniques are illustrated and the components of a model study are discussed, together with the synthesis of wind tunnel results with meteorological information. Details of the NBRl wind tunnel are given and the paper concludes with a discussion of the circumstances under which wind tunnel tests are likely to be beneficial.

Die belangrikheid van windtonnels in siviele ingenieurswesetoepassings neem toe, beide ten opsigte van ontwikkelingswerk vir gebruikskodes en as 'n deel van die ontwerpproses in strukturele toepassings. Hierdie referaat ondersoek die rol van die windtonnel in die ontwerpproses. Windtonnelmodelleringstegnieke word toegelig en die komponente van 'n modelstudie word bespreek, tesame met die sintese van windtonnelresultate met weerkundige inligting. Besonderhede word gegee van die NBNI-windtonnel en ten slotte word die omstandighede waaronder windtonneltoetse waarskynlik voordelig sal wees, bespreek.
