Kerb inlets are critical and expensive components of stormwater systems. The cost-effectiveness of a stormwater system depends largely on the hydraulic efficiency of its kerb inlets. Boksburg Municipality has developed a system with improved interception capacity at reduced cost per inlet. Field tests were undertaken to determine the hydraulic efficiency of the modified inlets and to check the applicability of the National Transport Commission (NTC) kerb inlet design charts for the design of such inlets. The tests proved the validity of the NTC design charts in the cases that were tested. It also became evident from the NTC charts that the interception capacity was far more sensitive to changes in effective length of the inlet than to changes in street gradient.
Various attempts have been made in South Africa to establish geotechnical and other related data banks. Such data banks are extremely useful in the planning and design of tunnels. This paper summarizes the present position regarding these data banks and illustrates their applicability to tunnelling. The authors conclude with this threefold plea: that the cities of Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London establish urban geotechnical data banks; that the fullest support be given to the SANCOT / CSIR tunnel data project; and that funds and manpower be made available to Geological Survey to enable them to put their geotechnical records on a computerized data base.

Hierdie referaat gee 'n opsomming van die huidige stand van sake wat sulke banke betref en skets hulle toepaslikheid op tonnels. Die skrywers sluit met die voigende drieledige pleidooi: dat die stede Pretoria, Kaapstad, Durban, Port Elizabeth en 00s-Londen hulle eie stedelike geotegniese databanke tot stand bring; dat volle samewerking aan die SANKOT / WNNR-tonnel-dataprojek gegee word; en dat die nodige fondse en mannekrag aan die Geologiese Opname beskikbaar gestel word om hulle in staat te stel om hulle geotegniese rekords op 'n gerekenariseerde databasis te plaas.
