Abstract

A theoretical Investigation Is carried out into the buckling loads of segmental columns. These are defined as columns made up of a number of rectangular segments: the segments comprise two different sizes (ie different lengths and flexural rigidities) and are arranged alternately along the column length. The battened column Is a practical example of this form. The analysis considers the effect on the buckling load of variations In the number of segments, the ratio of segmental flexural rigidities and the ratio of segmental lengths.

The results are used to investigate the stiffening effect of battens on the flexural rigidity of battened columns (an effect that is ignored in present practice). It is shown that battens can significantly increase the flexural rigidity (and hence the buckling load) of battened columns, with consequent economies In design.
