Abstract

'n Teoretiese ontleding van kniklasse van segmentkolomme word uitgevoer. Hierdle kolomme kan beskryf word as kolomme wat ult 'n aantal segmente saamgestel is: die segmente bestaan uit twee verskillende groottes (dws versklllende lengtes en buigstyfheid), wat afwlsselend oor die lengte van die kolom gerangskik is. Die belattekolom is 'n praktlese voorbeeld van hierdie vorm. The analysis considers the effect on the buckling load of variations In the number of segments, the ratio of segmental flexural rigidities and the ratio of segmental lengths.

The results are used to investigate the stiffening effect of battens on the flexural rigidity of battened columns (an effect that is ignored in present practice). It is shown that battens can significantly increase the flexural rigidity (and hence the buckling load) of battened columns, with consequent economies In design.
