Abstract

In June 1985, a few months prior to the completion of the new Graduate School of Business of the University of Stellenbosch in Bellville, a broken water pipe caused extensive flooding of the building's lower levels and footings. The eastern portion of the building subsided to such an extent that consideration was given to demolition and reconstruction of the building.

This article briefly describes a unique method that was used to stabilize the building and to raise the structure to its original level. Considerable savings in construction time and costs resulted. Some thoughts are also given on insurance applicable to this building project.
