Numerous pavement rehabilitation design methods are used in South Africa and overseas. They range from those that were derived empirically to multilayer linear elastic mechanistic methods. These methods differ in their suitability for specific problems, levels of expertise required for implementation and the cost of implementation. It follows that rehabilitation design methods are limited in their applicability and indiscriminate use could seriously affect the accuracy of results. Unfortunately, the limitations of these methods are not widely known and hence considerable experience and expertise in pavement rehabilitation are required for their effective use.

In this paper the applicability of rehabilitation design methods is discussed and guidelines are given to assist in their optimum selection. It is shown that the applicability of a pavement rehabilitation design method is a function of its derivation and of the pavement characteristics incorporated in the method. Hence, to assist in the identification of limitations, the methods are classified according to their basis of derivation. In addition, the variables in a pavement that could affect rehabilitation design are identified and combined in worksheets, which are used to determine the individual capabilities of methods. The use of these worksheets is demonstrated through the assessment of a selection of rehabilitation design methods. It is shown that all of these methods have limitations that affect their general applicability.

Die metodes verskil in hul geskiktheid vir sekere probleme, in die kundigheid benodig vir aanwending en in die kostes verbonde aan aanwending. Gevolglik is die toepasbaarheid van die metodes beperk en kan die onkundige aanwending daarvan die akkuraatheid van resultate ernstig beinvloed. Ongelukkig is die beperkings van die metodes nie algemeen bekend nie, en gevolglik word aansienlike kundigheid en ondervinding benodig vir die effektiewe aanwending van die metodes.

In die referaat word die toepaslikheid van plaveiselrehabilitasie-ontwerpmetodes bespreek en riglyne word vir die effektiewe aanwending van metodes gegee. Daar word gewys dat die toepasbaarheid van metodes 'n funksie is van die basis van afleiding van die metode en van die plaveiselkarakteristieke wat in die metode vervat word. Gevolglik word die metodes volgens hul basis van afleiding geklassifiseer as 'n eerste stap in die identifisering van beperkings geassosieer met metodes. Die veranderlikes in 'n plaveisel wat rehabilitasieontwerp kan beinvloed word ook geidentifiseer en in tabelle gekombineer wat gebruik kan word om die individuele eienskappe van metodes te bepaal. Die gebruik van die tabelle word deur die ontleding van 'n aantal metodes gedemonstreer. Daar word getoon dat al die metodes beperkings bevat wat hul algemene toepasbaarheid beinvloed.
