Abstract

Type 3CR12 corrosion-resistant steel has recently been developed as a weldable 12 percent chromium-containing, corrosion-resistant steel1 and has not been as widely documented as the other well-known ferritic stainless steels, types 409 and 430. For this reason a rather comprehensive discussion of the analysis of the mechanical properties of type 3CR12 steel is contained in this paper. Representative mechanical properties, for design purposes, have been established on the basis of 168 laboratory tests performed by the authors as well as a statistical analysis of 1 178 tests performed by the steel mill of Middelburg Steel and Alloys as part of their routine quality control programme. These mechanical properties apply only to sheet with a thickness of up to 3 mm and are not applicable to hot-rolled plate of greater thicknesses.

Roeswerende tipe 3CR12-staal is onlangs as 'n sweisbare 12 persent chroombevattende roeswerende staal ontwikkel. Hierdie staal is nie so bekend soos die welbekende ferritiese vlekvrye staaltipes 409 en 430 nie. 'n Uitgebreide studie van die meganiese eienskappe van tipe 3CR12 roeswerende staal word dus in hierdie referaat vervat. Meganiese eienskappe vir ontwerpdoeleindes is ontwikkel deur gebruik te maak van 168 laboratoriumtoetse asook van 'n statistiese analise wat uitgevoer is op 1 178 toetse wat deur Middelburg Steel and Alloys as deel van hulle kwalileitskontrole-program gedoen is. Hierdie meganiese eienskappe kan slegs gebruik word vir plaat dunner as 3 mm en is nie van toepassing op dikker plaat wat warm gewals is nie.
