oa Civil Engineer in South Africa - The battening of starred angle struts : technical paper

Abstract

Starred angles form a useful configuration for light compression members. However, it has been found in the past that the design requirements for these members have been very conservative and their restrictiveness has led to starred angles being used less than they might otherwise have been. Tests and analysis of starred angles using a much less conservative layout of battens have been carried out and are described. These have shown that batten spacing can be much greater than the limit set by the South African code, SABS 0162, although not as generous as the Canadian code, CAN3-S16.1, allows. On the basis of this research, simple and adequate recommendations are made for the design of these members.
