Abstract

Attention is drawn to the possible serious consequences of a sudden release of air during both the testing and operation of fibre-cement pipelines. The first part of the paper deals with failures during watertightness tests, highlighting important factors relating to such tests. The second part of the paper presents laboratory test results and gives an indication of the magnitude of induced pressure spikes due to sudden air release. Recommendations are made for the location of de-aeration points to limit air-release induced overpressures.

Fokus word geplaas op die gevolge van lug wat toegelaat word om te ontsnap vanuit 'n pyplyn gedurende die toets of bedryf daarvan. In die eerste gedeelte van die verhandeling word pypbreuke behandel wat ontstaan gedurende die uitvoering van 'lek-toetse' en aandag word aan die belangrikste bydraende faktore gewei. Die tweede deel van die verhandeling bespreek laboratorium resultate wat 'n aanduiding gee van die omvang en grootte van geinduseerde drukpieke wat ontstaan as gevolg van die vinnige ontsnapping van die lug vanuit 'n pyplyn wat onder druk verkeer. Aanbevelings ten opsigte van die plasing van ontlugtingspunte om die hoe drukspitse tot aanvaarbare vlakke te verminder, word gemaak.
