The marine environment provides a severe test of concrete durability owing to a combination of physical and chemical processes that may result in rapid deterioration unless good design and construction practice is followed. Requirement for durability must therefore be stringent in order to ensure adequate serviceability of marine structures. Issues pertaining to concrete durability such as material selection, design and construction are discussed and general recommendations are made for improving the potential durability of marine concrete. A design technique is proposed that allows concrete materials, design and construction to be optimized in terms of long-term characteristics that control durability performance. The use of sound design techniques and compliance testing of site concrete should promote good near-surface concrete properties necessary for durability.
