Fatigue failure of an asphalt layer is one of the primary structural distress modes found in flexible pavements, resulting from the repeated application of traffic-induced stresses. It is often exhibited as 'crocodile' cracking on the road surface. Various laboratory fatigue testing methods are used to characterize the fatigue performance of asphalt mixtures, but a more advanced method has been developed and the application to large aggregate mixes for bases (LAMBS) is discussed. The third-point loading fatigue testing method, specially modified, was incorporated. This fatigue testing system was used to determine the fatigue performance of a LAMBS mixture containing a nominal aggregate size of 37,5 mm. The LAMBS mixture was found to have a superior fatigue performance compared with a conventional continuously graded mixture with a 19 mm nominal aggregate size.
