Abstract

An approach to the evaluation of soil and ground water quality in areas contaminated by industrial practices is presented. The basis for the approach entrenches the concept of contaminant fate and mobility in soils, which are dependent on both contaminant and soil properties. Soil processes and the factors affecting fate and mobility are briefly reviewed as a background to the method of assessment. Experimental work is described, a literature survey considered and an approach to the assessment of the potential for soil and ground water contamination outlined. The approach facilitates a site-specific evaluation of present and future ground water quality and provides information for risk assessment and ground water transport modeling.
