From the earliest days of geotechnical engineering in South Africa, engineers and geologists have made extensive use of open holes for inspection and recording of soil profiles. In addition, employees in the piling industry frequently descend into uncased holes for cleaning and inspection. Just how legal is this practice and what should the industry do to maintain the exemptions from the strict implementation of the law that it appears to enjoy?
